Tânia Salgado Pimenta has a bachelor’s degree (1994) in History from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and a master’s (1997) and PhD (2003) in Social History from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). She is a researcher with the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz Research Department and professor with PPGHCS. Her research and teaching interests include the history of public health in Brazil; slavery and health; the history of the healing arts; and the history of hospitals and health assistance. She is currently investigating healing practices, epidemics, and health care, with a focus on the relations between different kinds of therapists and the ill and between the State and charity institutions, and epidemics and the slave population in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century.
