Marcos Chor Maio

Marcos Chor Maio has a bachelor’s degree (1978) in Social Sciences from the Universidade Federal Fluminense and a master’s (1991) and PhD (1997) in Political Science from the Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of History at New York University in 2012. He holds a CNPq Research Fellowship, level 1D. He is currently a researcher with the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz Research Department and professor with PPGHCS. He served as editor of the book review department for the journal História, Ciências, Saúde—Manguinhos from 1994 to 2005 and was a member of the editorial board of the Boletim do Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi (Human Sciences). From 2000 to 2003, he coordinated the Work Group on Brazilian Social Thought within the Brazilian Association of Postgraduate Programs and Research in Social Sciences (ANPOCS). His research and teaching interests include the history of the social sciences in Brazil; race, science, and health in Brazilian social thought; and international organizations and national policies. He is currently investigating the history of the social sciences; community studies and health in Brazil (1940-1960); the interfaces between sociology, anthropology, and social psychology in studies on race and racism in Brazil (1930-1950); and international agencies and local academic and political projects in the post-World War II period.
